While she was teaching at the Ipswich Female Seminary (a school founded by Zilpa Polly Grant, with whom Mary would become close friends), Mary decided to found Mount Holyoke. “In the six weeks before she left Ipswich, Mary Lyon had collected nearly $1,000 for fund-raising expenses from the ladies of Ipswich” (Green, 1979, p. 5).
