When Mary Lyon was setting out to raise funds for Mount Holyoke, her goal was to raise enough money to found a permanently endowed school for young women, organized and financed like the burgeoning colleges for men: buildings and equipment would be provided from gifts administered by an independent board of trustees, not by proprietors intent on making profits (Green, 1979, p. 3).
