Mary Lyon was born in Buckland MA and began to teach there when she was 17. She had had to become self-supporting at the age of 13, and her rise in the educational world was relatively slow. She was over 35 when she struck out on her own to found Mount Holyoke by main force, without the help of legacy, donated building, financial backing from a church, or even one rich patron (Green, 1979, p. xvi).
